Volunteer Recognition
Program
During our recent strategic planning session, the Board
developed an initiative to increase volunteerism within our association. To
achieve this initiative, we want to create a volunteer recognition program
that formally acknowledges and rewards members who contribute to the success
of AHIA.
We are currently seeking volunteers to serve on a task force to
develop the recognition program. This is a short-term commitment with
long-term results, so please contact me via email if you would like to participate
in this worthwhile endeavor. Thanks!

currently undertaking a concerted effort to re-evaluate this option. Please
take a few seconds to help us by answering this one-question survey.
There is additional space to add your comments, should you desire to do
so.

Technology
Corner
|
|

|
AHIA's Technology Committee is now offering the Technology
Corner column that will cover hot topics, news and tips on technology and
current risks in the IT world in the E-News. Here is the first tip of this
new series from committee member Roger Brown.
Password Complexity Meter
Here is a web site http://www.passwordmeter.com/
which evaluates the strength of user's passwords. It looks like nothing is
being submitted to the web site, so it does not appear that the tested
passwords are being collected by anyone. Even so, if your password were
69=1pint and you entered 73=1word (both are evaluated as 'strong' passwords),
there is zero chance of sharing an actual password with the author of the
password meter. Other passwords tested and their rating:
- 12345678
very weak
- 123456-8
good
- A12345-7
strong
By playing just a few minutes with this
tool, regular users can see how minor changes can dramatically strengthen
their passwords without making them impossible to remember!
One last test is -p0o9i8u. Although this looks impossible to
remember, it starts with the hyphen and goes down up down up moving to the
left on a standard keyboard, and it is a strong password that I would never
forget. I would not remember the content but I would also not forget the
visual pattern. Password complexity is a game of what we individually are
good at remembering.

Annual
Conference Keynote
|
|

|

One of this year's keynote speakers at the conference will be Jeanne Scott
a leading Washington, DC healthcare policy analyst and lobbyist, Jeanne
brings the latest in "inside-the-beltway" analysis and insight,
touched with humor and anecdotes, to the AHIA Annual Fall Conference
to be held September 6-10 in Denver, CO.
Currently
Ms. Scott is the somewhat irreverent writer, editor and publisher of the
humbly named electronic newsletter, theJeanneScottletter.
In previous lives, she has been the director of government relations for
NDCHealth, the Washington, DC office director and chief lobbyist for the
Catholic Health Association in the United States (CHAUSA) and a former
Assistant Attorney General for the State of Michigan. She served during the
first Reagan Administration as counsel to the Health Care Financing
Administration.
Join us at the conference to hear Jeanne's thoughts on the potential impacts
of the election on healthcare.

Call
for Awards Nominations
|
|

|
It is time once again to submit nominations for the three
prestigious AHIA awards which, if approved, will be presented in September at
AHIA's 2008 Annual Conference:
- The Founders
Award
- The AHIA
Award
- The
Institutional Award
Each of these awards represents a significant accomplishment for
an individual or organization. We have inserted some baseball terminology, to
clarify and distinguish differences and to aid your understanding of these
awards.
The Founders Award (AHIA Hall of Fame)
This award is reserved for those key members who have gone above the normal
call of duty and served AHIA for at least 6 years. A candidate must have had
a role in a strategic initiative of AHIA within the past 4 years. Members
presented with this award are those that are dedicated to the profession and,
at least at the time of their award, believed that they would always be in
the internal audit profession. This is the Association's highest and most
prestigious award. These members represent the AHIA "Hall of Fame."
The AHIA Award (AHIA MVP)
The AHIA Award is presented to any individual (need not be an AHIA member) to
recognize their substantial support of AHIA and their achievement of
professional excellence. These individuals may have served AHIA in only one
capacity or one year but their endeavor(s) made an obvious difference in the
success of AHIA. These individuals displayed "Most Valuable Player"
(MVP) performances during the endeavor(s) and there is a belief that this
individual will continue to be supportive of AHIA and the internal audit
profession. It might be just a matter of time (more seasons) that the
recipient of this award will qualify for the prestigious Founder's Award.
The Institutional Award (AHIA All Star Team)
This award is given to those institutions (Universities, Hospitals, Vendors,
professional services firms, etc.) that have demonstrated continuing support
of AHIA's goals and objectives in furthering our mission and vision. The
support could exist in many forms, such as providing facilities, staff,
advice, counsel, operational assistance, or other resources. Their support
should have been consistent over a period of time.
It is important to note that none of these awards have been given each and
every year, but are reserved for those outstanding people and organizations
that have provided timely and/or consistent support by one or more of the
various means described above.
Make a Nomination
To nominate, simply send an email to AHIA@ahia.org
and provide the nominees' name, organization, and detailed information as to
why you think the person or institution deserves the particular award for
which you are recommending them by June 15, 2008. To see previous recipients
of these three awards, go to the AHIA web
site, click the "About AHIA" tab, then scroll to and click on
"Awards".

West
Coast CAE Forum
|
|

|
The
AHIA's recent West Coast Chief Audit Executive (CAE) Forum was "sold
out" with 25 attendees from the United States and Canada. This two day
networking event in February provided senior internal audit management the
opportunity to spend time with their peers, share best practices and learn
about emerging and innovative audit approaches.
Highlights of the Forum included Chairman Barbara Winburn's
review of AHIA's strategic priorities which include providing more networking
opportunities for members. AHIA looks forward to organizing and delivering
more local and regional events for its members.
Sharp Healthcare in San Diego was the host site and Sharp's CEO, Mike Murphy,
described Sharp's journey to achieving the 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National
Quality Award. From his perspective both as a senior healthcare executive and
audit committee chairman of a public company, he provided his views on how internal
audit can provide value to their organizations.
AHIA member Don Holdegraver, Chief Internal Auditor of the University of
North Texas System, said "I found this to be extremely beneficial! The
small size made it very interactive—excellent!! Look forward to future
roundtables." Emily Cribb, Director of Internal Audit for the St Joseph
Health System added "Best forum that I have attended by AHIA."
In the photo above, Joyce
Lang and Glenn Mueller share information.
